The color of light emitted by a lamp or light source is expressed as a color temperature. Only white light shades are assigned a color temperature, expressed in the unit Kelvin (K). For example, 3000 Kelvin or 3000 K.
The lower the color temperature, the warmer the light feels. The light has a yellow/orange-like glow, similar to candlelight. And the higher the color temperature, the cooler the light becomes. This is experienced as brighter, bluish light.
We can therefore speak of warm white, neutral white, or cool white light. The applied color temperature determines the atmosphere in a space as shown in the table.
Designation | Color Temperature | Experience | Application |
Warm white | up to 3300 K | Cozy warm | Living rooms and bedrooms |
Neutral white | 3500 K – 4500 K | White bright | Offices and kitchens |
Cool white | 5000 K – 6500 K | Cool sterile | Workspaces and hospitals |
At home, you naturally want to create a cozy and warm atmosphere. In the house, we choose a color temperature of 3000 K or lower. Lamps at 2700 K provide an extra cozy light like candles. In kitchens and bathrooms, a slightly cooler light, around 4000 K, can be more pleasant. But personal preference is also important. For example, 3000 K in a kitchen is perfectly possible.
Color temperature has an influence on your mood and productivity. Warmer light (low color temperature) is relaxing, while cooler light (high color temperature) can make you alert and focused.
Is a higher color temperature always better for workspaces?
Not always. Although color temperatures of 5000 K – 6000 K help with concentration, too blue light can be tiring for the eyes. For offices, 3000 K or 4000 K is often recommended.
Some modern LED lamps and fixtures have an adjustable color temperature. This allows you to change the color temperature with a dimmer or a smart app. These products are often described as “Tunable white”, or adjustable white.
