What Does the IP Rating Mean for Lighting?

The IP rating (Ingress Protection) indicates how well a fixture is protected against dust and moisture. It consists of two digits: the first digit represents protection against solid objects (such as dust), and the second digit represents protection against moisture and water.

Here is an overview of some common IP ratings:

  • IP20: Protected against contact, but not against moisture (suitable for indoor use).
  • IP44: Splash-proof, suitable for bathrooms and covered outdoor areas.
  • IP65: Completely dust-tight and protected against water jets (suitable for outdoor use).
  • IP67: Dust-tight and resistant to temporary immersion in water.
  • IP68: Completely waterproof and suitable for prolonged immersion.

For outdoor lighting, a minimum of IP44 is recommended. For lighting exposed to rain and severe weather conditions, IP65 or higher is more suitable.

This depends on the volume in which the lighting is placed:

  • Volume 0 (in bath or shower): Minimum IP67.*
  • Volume 1 (above bath or shower up to 2.25 m high): Minimum IPx4 / IPx5.*
  • Volume 2 (up to 60 cm around bath or shower and up to 2.25 m high): Minimum IP44.
  • Outside these zones, IP20 is sufficient.

* Specific requirements for maximum voltages and heights apply! Use of electrical equipment should be limited as much as possible!

IP65 means that a fixture is dust-tight and protected against water jets. IP67 goes a step further and offers protection against temporary immersion in water.

A lamp with IP68 is completely dust-tight and can remain underwater for extended periods. This is ideal for pond and swimming pool lighting.
